about

Opportunity Knocks was my first attempt at a 'solo' album. Before this, I had never seriously tried to write a song, explore a lyrical concept, or anything like that.

I had previously produced an album called 'A Vision And A Plan' with Emilio Rojas (at the time, Sycorax One, then Raks One) under the group name, Phocus. We put that album out with Handcuts/Universal Records Japan in 2004, to overwhelming support and acclaim.

Handcuts asked me to do a solo album to follow up the success of Phocus, and I decided to give it a shot. I had messed around with rhyming a little in the past (both on the Lightheaded album, 'Pure Thoughts' I produced in 2001, and the Phocus album), so it sounded like fun.

I put my terms on the table. I would make a solo album to release with Handcuts if they could get me a beat from Pete Rock and DJ Spinna, two of my mentors growing up with hip hop music. I knew I was shooting for the stars and the chances were slim, but I figured I would put it out there.

To my surprise, I got a call one evening after returning home to my apartment in Toronto's west-end from a long day's work at a collections agency in Scarborough (in an era I now call 'the dark ages'). The voice on the other end of the line sounded strikingly familiar, but I couldn't place it.

"Hello, is this Muneshine?"

"It is, who's this?"

"Pete Rock. Whatup man? It looks like you and I have some work to do."

I nearly dropped the phone. I didn't really know how to respond, without sounding like a complete fan-boy. Needless to say, I fumbled my way through that conversation and ended up making the song 'Imagine That' with my idol behind the boards. It would be a gross understatement to call this an honour.

The collaboration with Spinna went equally well, and he and I are still working together to this day (another huge honour!).

I probably didn't deserve these opportunities at the time, and looking back now the title of the album appears a little ironic, but that's how it went down. It was the beginning of my career as an MC.
